Last year I visited Pondicherry which is now known as Puducherry – “new town”. Although Puducherry is aged historically, it truly justifies its new name. The place has successfully retained its history in a very modern way.
Before going to this small city in Chennai situated across the coast, I searched for all the possible places and things to do in the city. Pondicherry has been in my list for a very long time, and I wanted to explore all the possible locations. But there are a few things that I think everyone must experience when they are in this beautiful city.
The White Town
The White Town is a very well-known colony which tells Pondicherry’s history through its beautiful architecture. The entire province is like a canvas, full of white buildings, reflecting the colours of the bright sky. It was a treat for my eyes and the hidden photographer in me. But instead of just visiting cafes in White town, take a long stroll in the colony under the shade of the trees and blend in the true colours of the city.
I had heard much about Sacred Heart of Basicilla in Puducherry, but I explored a better option- Notre Dame in White Town. The church has beautiful architecture, and since not many people know it, it is not jammed with people. The church gives you a beautiful view of the Rock Beach and leaves your soul at peace.
Rock Beach at Night
Rock Beach in Puducherry is another much talked about place. I visited the beach at night when it was more pleasant, and the sun was not on top of our heads. Much to my surprise, the beach was very lively yet peaceful at the same time. The experience of walking barefoot under the moonlight on the Rock Beach is very close to my heart. Just as the sand brushed my skin from underneath, the sound of the waves and the moonlight touched my soul deeply. I wish I could stay in that moment all my life.
A Fine Dine Night
I was in the French town, and I could not have skipped going to a Fine Dine. So I visited Le Dupliex restaurant to have a classy night with some ravioli and wine. I can now safely say it is worth obsessing over the best ravioli I ever had. This is definitely a MUST do.
Mission Street is the last place I would suggest that one must visit. From cafes to chill and eat at to shops for purchasing decorative items, books, clothes etc. you will find everything. You might find something you were not looking for as well.
These experiences fulfilled the heart of a girl who had wished for a little bit of art and French culture. My Puducherry trip will always be a special and memorable one because a part of my heart clung itself to it.
